New York Daily News: Bronx Community Health Network CHAMPS health and wellness in the Bronx
Below is an excerpt from New York Daily News on May 5, 2015:
Bronx Community Health Network (BCHN) is excited to announce the kick-off of a series of nutrition and physical activity programs. Bronx REACH CHAMPS, a multi-sector coalition of health and human services, education, parks and recreation, community and faith-based leaders and residents led by BCHN, aims to reduce obesity and improve overall health and wellness of the Bronx’s culturally and ethnically diverse population. This Centers for Disease Control and Prevention supported Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) initiative is especially critical at a time when a yearly Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin study ranks the Bronx last out of 62 New York State counties, for the sixth straight year.
The causes of racial and ethnic health disparities are complex and include individual, community, societal, cultural, and environmental factors. By leveraging and engaging the resources and strengths of the Bronx and its people, REACH CHAMPS partners plan to collaboratively implement a number of nutrition and physical activity interventions that have shown great promise in changing policies, systems and environments that support access to affordable, fresh fruits and vegetables and options for active living for people of all ages.
